Gawain is Jack Norton's Executive Officer. He is the Captain of Norton's Flagship and gives out tactical commands to the bridge crew and the fleet as a whole occasionally, deciding the shield types, fleet formations and short term maneuvering while Norton takes care of strategic decisions.[1]
Well... that is, if they can agree long enough for such a system to work as it should. His serious personality clashes with that of his more casual commanding officer.
